Aquanita Formguide
From The Horses Mouth

Women are gaining an increasing amount of coverage and recognition in sports, horse racing being no exception. Almost half our stable staff and track riders are female and women are taking up prominent positions in all areas of our great industry. In acknowledgment of the wonderful ladies who have supported us in our careers we have chosen a special charity for our major fundraising event.

Each year for our Charity Golf Day we target an organisation to donate all proceeds to. This year we will be supporting the Ovarian Cancer Network. The impetus to align ourselves with this group was bought to our attention by Jacquie Little wife of Caulfield trainer Colin Little. Jacquie an excellent horse person in her own right has become heavily involved in this group, even going to the extreme of walking the Kokoda Track with a group of girl friends to raise awareness of Ovarian Cancer. Each year in Victoria alone over 400 women are diagnosed with this disease.

All of us at some stage in our lives have been affected by the ravages of cancer. We ask all supporters of Aquanita Racing to get behind and dig deep for this Charity Day. If you cannot play in the Golf Day, think about offering a prize for the auction or simply make a donation to the Ovarian Cancer Research Foundation by visiting the web site www.ovca.org.au and follow the links to the donations page.

Jacquie is well known to the racing industry working in partnership as a trainer with husband Colin at Caulfield. So whilst we compete on race days a worthy cause will always unite us. Jacquie has recently walked the Kokoda trail in an effort to heighten awareness of Ovarian Cancer and our Golf Day will top off a busy few months for her.

In the six completed charity days we have organized, a total in excess of $40,000 has been raised. So not only do you have a great day you end up supporting a great cause.

All you need to do is complete the attached form and email, fax or post back to us along with your payment. Bookings are based on a first come first served basis so don't delay. Team entries will be accepted as long as payment accompanies the form.

AQUANITA AND AUSGUM TO THE RESCUE

Ausgum Furniture from Gympie in Queensland joined forces with the Brisbane Turf Club and Aquanita Racing to throw a lifeline to employees of Aquanita's Brisbane operation affected by the shutdown of racing due to the EI virus.

Initiated after joint discussions between Ausgum Managing Director, Adam Gleeson, and Aquanita's trainer Liam Birchley, Brisbane Aquanita employees who otherwise would have been put off work will be able to maintain their normal wage by assisting Ausgum to assemble products in a temporary facility being provided on course at Doomben.

"When the reality of the effects of the EI virus hit home it became apparent that up to third of my staff and many key suppliers would have to be temporarily put off. Not only would that have a devastating effect on those involved it also meant that they may have been lost to the Industry creating problems down the line when training resumes in a few months time" Birchley said.

"In discussions with Adam Gleeson who owns Ausgum we devised a plan to set up a temporary manufacturing base in Hendra that would assist him in fulfilling some large orders and at the same time keep my valued staff and suppliers in work" he added

Enter the Brisbane Turf Club who have enthusiastically leant their support to the project by making available covered space for the assembly to proceed. Chief Executive Sean Kelk highlighted "how impressed his club was that a trainer would go to such lengths to protect the livelihood of those people who underpin his operation. We were also overwhelmed that a furniture manufacturer from outside of Brisbane would be prepared to set up a local base to help the cause and had no hesitation in lending our support to the venture" he said.

Those who will be involved include suppliers such as the farrier, track riders and float driver.

It is envisaged the operation will step into full swing by the end of October and continue through until Christmas. And if you are looking for some great Australian made and ecologically sound furniture ideas visit Ausgum's website www.ausgum.com, they have a great range available.

Around The Tracks

• Liam Birchley has had a bit of a tough time recently with the EI virus closing down his Brisbane operation for an extended period. Amidst all the gloom was the terrific news that his wife Rebecca gave birth to their second child on the fifteenth of October.

• The Moonee Valley Racing Clubs "Breakfast with the Best" held on the Tuesday before the Cox Plate was a hugely successful morning. Several of the fancied runners galloped, coffee and breakfast was served, while the dulcet tones of David Raphael and the evergreen Bryan Martin kept the crowd up to date with the times and splits of all runners.
