Aquanita Formguide
From The Horses Mouth

For me the first sign of spring is not football finals or the sight of migratory birds soaring overhead but the emergence of the serious spring horses. Logic and history tell you that to be a part of the spring features horses need to be racing well before spring.

Haradasun will make his return to racing in the Bletchingly Stakes on the 4th of August. With two Group 1 races to his name he is no longer a pretender but a serious contender who silenced critics with his emphatic victories during the Sydney autumn.

The colt has returned in magnificent condition with his aim being the WS Cox Plate in October, arguably the greatest race in Australia. The first Tuesday in November may have the hype and party but for purists the Cox Plate is the race of the spring.

Happy Racing

Around The Tracks

• The Victoria Racing Club's jumping achievement of the year award went to Some Are Bent, who has continued to take all before him.

• Fantastic to see owners braving the cold on a chilly winter morning. Saturday the 14th of July saw representatives from three horses, Street Parade, Pelican Head and Zedrich x Miss Firecracker shake the sleep from their eyes to watch early morning track work. Trainer Robert Smerdon was on hand to answer any questions. The bbq was put into action to feed the big group eager for some breakfast while the three horses were paraded. A great family atmosphere prevailed and the kids had a great time feeding and patting the horses.

• Racing has returned to Geelong with the opening of the all weather track. Hoping to become a future trivia question was Able Dragon trained by Tony Vasil. The galloper was in race one, saddlecloth number one, a good sign for omen punters, but alas he finished second beaten a lip.

• Naming of horses can sometimes be a little tricky and its always great to see a little creativity come into the process. One that caught the eye recently was Thisonesonme. The breeding Generous x Huka (pronounced hooker).

Aquanita Vets Lead The Way With IRAP

Joint damage and lameness is one of the biggest causes of racehorse poor performance and reason for retirement. There has been a vast amount of research performed on the pathology of equine joint disease. For many years now we have had the same products available for the treatment of joint disease. However this is all about to change.

Joint disease is characterized by inflammation within the joint that leads to an inflammatory cascade with the production of a large amount of inflammatory enzymes that can cause further damage. These pro-inflammatory enzymes will actually delay the body’s own natural healing response. Cortisone can stop these inflammatory mediators well but it will not stimulate a regenerative response.

IRAP is a system that has been developed to stimulate white blood cells to produce anti-inflammatory mediators and enzymes to reduce the inflammatory phase of joint disease. Blood is taken from the jugular vein and incubated for 24 hours in special syringes that contain glass beads, which induce the white blood cells to produce and secrete therapeutic proteins during the incubation period. After24 hours the blood is centrifuged and all red blood cells removed. This leaves a protein rich serum, which is then split, into 3ml doses ready for injection into the diseased joint. Typically each collection produces enough serum for between 6-7 injections.

Kensington Banks Equine Services, Aquanita’s Victorian veterinary business has recently purchased the equipment that allows this treatment to be performed. We are one of only a handful of veterinary practices in the country with this technology. This therapy heralds the new generation of treatment options available to manage equine joint disease and provides us with an edge that we hope will prolong the career and performance of horses with joint problems.
