Aquanita Formguide
From The Horses Mouth

In the weight for age championship of Australasia fighting out of the Aquanita Blue corner will be the local boy Haradasun, wearing his famous tri coloured trunks of yellow, red diamonds and white.

Taking on the local boy will be a big contingent of assorted fighters all ready to make their mark at the highest level. The assorted pack is chasing the WFA mantle vacated by the old champ Fields of Omagh.

The belt looked to be heading toward El Segundo, who looks back to his best after taking a heavy hit on Cox Plate day last year.

Representing the west, tougher than Danny Green is Marasco, he looked great in defeating Apache Cat before dropping his guard to a rampaging Rubiscent at Caulfield, queries are being raised on whether the Perth champ can go the distance.

Miss Finland probably fought out of her weight division last year but with a years worth of fights and experience under her belt, she looms as a dangerous opponent.

Efficient trained by wily fox Graeme Rogerson, knows a thing or two about holding a title having trained Savabeel to a WFA championship, plus he has the best corner man in the business, Lloyd Williams.

Halfway through the preliminaries bring on the main bout.

Alfalfa enjoying the afternoon sun
On The Derby Trail
Prominent thoroughbred owner Nick Moraitis suffered a spring setback with one time Caulfield Cup favourtite Fiumicino being stuck in Sydney and unable to travel south for the Melbourne Spring Carnival. Stepping up to perhaps fill the breech is tough three year old gelding Alfalfa who trainer Tony Vasil hopes may make into a Derby contender.

By Japanese Group one winning sire Black Hawk; Alfalfa has responded to every challenge. He made an impressive debut at Sale where he ran home strongly to finish sixth. Next start over 1600m at Seymour he recorded an impressive albeit narrow victory before a good second to Asian Tales. His latest outing over 2025m at Cranbourne, Alfalfa - or The Sprout as he is affectionately called - saluted by half a length despite going up a grade and carrying more weight.

Tony Vasil commented post race about Alfalfa "He's a big strong brute of a horse that just loves being a racehorse. We dish the work up to him and he just loves everything, never leaving an oat. He'll stay longer than your mother in law and in a year when there doesn't appear to be a lot of depth in the three year old staying ranks he may be a Derby horse."

Vasil knows a little bit about training for the Derby having guided his super star colt Elvstroem to the 2003 Victorian Derby. A year later on the first Tuesday in November "Elvis" ran a gallant fourth in a Melbourne Cup behind mare Maykbe Diva, international horse Vinnie Roe with Aquanita stable mate Zazzman third at cricket score odds.

The dam of Zazzman is a mare called Glen Iris, who later in life just happened to have another foal called Svelta the dam of Alfalfa. Given time perhaps "The Sprout" might be able to go two better than his mum's outstanding half brother.

Light Vision Shows the Way

Lightly raced gelding Light Vision is quickly putting together a strong resume. The Robert Smerdon trained galloper now has six wins and two placing from fourteen career starts, with each victory coming at 2000m and beyond.

From seven starts this campaign Light Vision has kept on improving managing to string together four wins in succession.

He is a very versatile galloper having won on tracks rated from good to heavy, with the adaptability to race on pace or come from well back. Leading apprentice Sebastian Murphy is forming a good bond with the horse having won on him at his last three starts.

Trainer Robert Smerdon said he will now look at richer races with the Zerpour gelding to see how far he can go.

"It's a bit like Hofmeister earlier this year in that he continued to improve through his campaign," Smerdon said. "We have considered Tasmania but if you stop now you've got to get them back and so many things can happen."

Options for the son of Zerpour include the Listed Bart Cummings Hcp over 2500m on Turnball Stakes day or the Benalla Gold Cup on the seventh of October over 2300m.

Around The Tracks

• Punters who read the Aquanita Form guide may want to take notice of this statistic. The trainer / jockey combination of Tony Vasil and Dan Brereton have an amazing 30 per cent winning strike rate from 49 rides over the last twelve months.

• Three Aquanita horses have put together some impressive winning streaks. Lucky Secret is yet to taste defeat in seven starts. During winter, Some Are Bent caught the headlines with his eight consecutive jumps victories, while promising young stayer Light Vision has won his last four races with the potential of more to come.

• The Dato Tan Chin Nam Stakes provided a classic contest which saw two Cox Plate contenders fight out a classic finish. Winners over the last 10 years have included El Segundo, Lad Of The Manor, Fields Of Omagh, Northerly and Sunline. Currently this race holds Group 2 status but considering the caliber of winners over the last few years looks like the time is right for an upgrade to Group 1.
