Wednesday, 14 May 2008: Though the bulk of his success has been in the Northern Hemisphere, there can be little doubting the contribution recently retired super stallion Sadler's Wells has made in Australia and New Zealand.

While he has come in for criticism in some quarters over the years for not 'cracking it' with his sire sons in Australia, there's a few stallions that have been tagged 'successful' in these parts that would envy the record Sadler's Wells has built in Australia and New Zealand.
Perhaps the criticism comes from his own success, as his critics expect nothing less than perfection owing to his enormous reputation in Europe.
Such is his standing in the Northern Hemisphere, respected TDN columnist Bill Oppenheim was moved to write yesterday that Sadler's Wells “singlehandedly restored the reputation of Europe as a place where you could stand world-class stallions after European stallion ranks had been decimated by the Americans in the 1970s and 1980s.”
But when you break it down, Sadler's Wells has still made a tremendous contribution to Australasian racing.
His sire sons have produced no less than 26 individual Group 1 winners in Australia and New Zealand, including 22 in Australia.
Sadler's Wells himself is the sire of Australian Group 1 winners Darazari and Runyon, along with the G2 winner Hatha Anna.
Furthermore, he is the great grandsire of G1 winners Rewaaya and The Pooka, by Sadler's Wells' sons Singspiel and Barathea respectively.
So that's no less than 30 individual Group 1 winners from the Sadler's Wells sire line in Australia and New Zealand.
How many other stallions can lay claim to that type of statistic?
The G1 winners are made up by contributions from eight of his sire-sons, in addition to grandsons Singspiel and Tobougg, and of course Sadler's Wells himself.
And that's not to mention the countless Group 2 and Group 3 winners that have emanated from the time his sons have stood at stud in this part of the World.
Then there's his broodmare record. Around the world he is the damsire of more than 1300 winners, including 168 individual stakes winners.
These extend to Australia and New Zealand, where he has had 66 winners as a broodmare sire, including eight stakes winners and another 6 stakes placed at a rate of nearly 20% stakes horses to runners, highlighted by multiple G1 winner Serenade Rose.
Furthermore, these statistics don't include the countless other top class horses that have Sadler's Wells blood running through their veins.
A prime example being Australia's Champion 2 and 3YO filly from the past two seasons Miss Finland, whose grand dam is Sadler's Wells' Classic winning daughter Moonshell.
