$22K Tried Horse Claims Tatts Cup

Bookmark and Share

Saturday, 20 June 2009: Lloyd Williams has developed a great reputation for on-selling quality thoroughbreds and that was enhanced further today when Zabeel gelding Hume scored a dominant win in the G3 Tattersall’s Cup at Eagle Farm.

Williams offered a big draft of horses for unreserved sale on the Gold Coast in January, with Strumming ($67,000), Publishing ($55,000), Illude ($50,000) and Meld ($40,000) making up four of the top six lots in the inaugural MM Summer Carnival Sale.

But it is Hume that is making headlines now.

He was secured by the Condon family for just $22,000 – not bad for a $400,000 yearling that had won two of his three starts.

Brisbane has been a happy hunting ground for Williams discards, with the likes of Enthusiast and Simplest going right through their grades in their new homes.

Though not a discard, Williams also sold subsequent Hong Kong Champion Vengeance Of Rain after his two-year-old season.

Hume has now won four of his eight starts for new trainer Brian Smith, with today’s first prize of $130,000 clearly his biggest pay day to date.

But being a five-year-old son of Zabeel, it is likely Hume is up to winning bigger races later on, given he has gone from a midweek Class 3 to a Group 3 2200m Handicap during this campaign.

Graeme Rogerson gave $400,000 on behalf of Williams for Hume at the 2005 New Zealand Bloodstock Premier Yearling Sale.

He is by Zabeel from the Arazi mare Lolette, from a family that includes G1 Royal Ascot Coronation Stakes winner Rebecca Sharp.

Zabeel continues to amaze.

Hume is his seventh Australian stakes winner this season and the Cambridge Stud champion is set for yet another top four finish on the Australian Sires list this season, with progeny earnings topping $7.4million.
