Wednesday, 25 November 2009: Former Group race winning mares La Volta and La Zoffany both produced promising winners at today's Betfair Park Sandown Lakeside meeting.
The Zoffany mare La Zoffany was a top performer over a number of seasons after originally being sold as a yearling for just $20,000 at the Magic Millions in 1998.
Hr first feature win was the Listed Great Western on Melbourne Cup Day in 1999. The victory was more famous for being the race that got the monkey off Frankie Dettori's back in Australia.
But La Zoffany showed herself to be a genuine stakes performer, later taking the G2 Marsh Classic in Adelaide in May 2000 and then the Listed Matron Stakes at Flemington in April 2002.
She retired with six wins and earnings topping $400,000.
Her three-year-old More Than Ready son
Gangland
looks to have a promising future after finishing strongly to win over 1600m at Sandown.
Gangland is raced by trainer Danny O'Brien and Widden Stud's Antony Thompson, who also bred the gelding. He was offered at last year's Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale, where he failed to reach his $400,000 reserve.
Gangland is one of two winners from as many to race from La Zoffany, who has since produced colts by Anabaa, Rock Of Gibraltar and Fastnet Rock.
In the following race, La Volta's daughter Bullion Mansion landed her second win when proving a touch too strong for her 'aunty' Rock Honey over 1400m.
Bullion Mansion
is a four-year-old mare by Encosta De Lago and races in the Redoute's Choice and Manhattan Rain colours after being sold to Teeley Assets for $625,000 at the 2007 Easter Sale from the Coolmore Stud draft.
Prepared by Colin Alderson, La Volta (Laranto) had her career highlight when winning the 1998 G1 Australasian Oaks by more than three lengths.
She is now the dam of four winners from five to race.
Since Bullion Mansion, she has produced two fillies by Encosta De Lago and a Rock Of Gibraltar filly last year.
Bullion Mansion beat Rock Honey, who is a $155,000 Rock Of Gibraltar half-sister to La Volta, being from the Todvega mare Vegahoney.
