Port Winner Boasts Unique Breeding

  Story By Brian Russell

Thursday, 5 July 2012: Few winners are as uniquely bred as Snipsys Girl, a 5YO mare who won a lowly C1 event over 2000m at Port Macquarie on July 2.

Bred, owned and trained by Denis Drury of Lansdowne near Taree, Snipsys Girl was not only enjoying the first win of her 25 start career but also provided her sire Hipshots Boy with a 100 percent starters to winners record.

Bred in 1993, Hipshots Boy has had only four foals, two of which have been named. The other two are yearlings.

Snipsy's Girl, placed twice at Newcastle before her breakthrough at Port Macquarie, is his only runner.

The unraced Hipshots Boy is by Boutade, a winning son of Bletchingly, and is one of two foals from Kirk Girl, a non winner by Royal Kirk, a tough sprinter who won 16 of his 68 starts on city, provincial and country tracks in NSW.

Royal Kirk was by Captain Kirk, a fast son of the Hall of Fame stallion Sky High, the notable Golden Slipper and Victoria Derby winner by Star Kingdom.

After standing at Woodlands Stud in the Hunter Valley, Sky High moved to America where he sired Autobiography, the champion US older performer of 1972 when he won the G1 Jockey Club Gold Cup over two miles at New York's Belmont Park.

The distance of the race is now ten furlongs and America does not have a Group race at two miles or further.

Besides her sire's unusual background, Snipsy Girl's maternal breeding is also modest.

She is the first of two living foals from Sweet Corinth, a mare who raced six times for Denis Drury without picking up any prize money.

She is by Sir Bernard, a grandson of Kaoru Star grandson whose 15 wins included victories at Randwicka and Warwick Farm plus the Newcastle Newmarket and Hawkesbury Rowley Mile.

Windbag also had a brother named Bicolor who won a Hotham Handicap. ”

An aspect of Snipsys Girl''s unique breeding that has been overlooked is her dam line. She descends from Loquacious (winner of the 1929 AJC Metropolitan)and sister to Windbag, whose 13 stakes wins included the 1927 Melbourne Cup and the 1926 AJC Warwick Stakes. ”

In days gone by, Mellay, Noble Bijou, Balloch, all champion sires, all unraced. In the USA moons ago, Alibhai was pretty good and I don''t think he got to the races (not to be confused with the son of Noble Bijou of same name). ”

"it''s unusual for an unraced stallion to stand at stud?"

Not so unusual Jenny, there is a multitude of unraced stallions standing for $10,000 or less. ”

Unique perhaps because it''s unusual for an unraced stallion to stand at stud? ''Boasts'' in the heading is misleading. ”

Why?
