The award is decided on a points system from performances in Group races with Streama's overall record for the season giving her more points than popular picks Pierro and More Joyous.

Streama won only two G1 races, the Flight Stakes and AJC Oaks, but her overall record in Group races gave her more points than triple G1 winners Pierro and More Joyous.

Unbeaten Triple Crown winner Pierro was named two-year-old of the year and More Joyous the champion sprinter-miler.

Other winners were Manighar (middle distance) and Niwot (stayer).

Premier trainer Chris Waller collected his second Bart Cummings Medal polling 67 votes to beat champion jockey Hugh Bowman by two votes.

I wonder if any weighting is given to those group races? For instance, is a group one race for two or three year-olds, considered harder or easier to win than an open-age G1? ”
