MT WYCHEPROOF: Special Day For Berlot Family
It's along way from the glamour of Flemington but Derby Day at Mt Wycheproof on Saturday will be special for the Berlot family.
Donald trainer Frank Belot will saddle up Be Crafty in the Elders Mt. Wycheproof Cup, a horse he part-owns with his father and breeder Walter Belot.
As Frank cheekily pointed out, his father bred the horse and the trainer.
“You could say the horse is a member of the family and racing a horse with your family gives you great satisfaction,” Belot said.
Two starts ago Be Crafty won the Macquarie Manangatang Cup, making the 7YO gelding the first horse eligible for the inaugural VBA Murray-Mallee Owners Bonus of $5000.
The Bonus is awarded to the owners of any horse that can complete the Manangatang-Wycheproof Cup double.
“The $5000 would be very handym" Belot said.
"The horse is looking good and has pulled up well from Horsham. It is full steam ahead."
Be Crafty was third in the Horsham Cup last start.
By Cavalry out of Brilliantissimo, Be Crafty has been an honest horse for the Belot family.
In 35 starts Be Crafty has won five races and placed nine times and they have collected a cheque from 20 of his starts.
Young jockey Chris Pace has ridden Be Crafty in his past two starts. He will check the Wycheproof racecourse later in the week, hoping for some give in the ground, but is expecting Be Crafty to perform at his best on Saturday.
Murray Mallee Region racing manager Carl Hufer says everyone loves racing at `Wyche' on Derby Day.
“The atmosphere at Mt. Wycheproof always attracts a huge crowd from various places throughout Victoria and interstate.
"Cup Day is one big reunion for all the people who have ever lived in or near Wycheproof,” Hufer said.
