Efficient Tops In Turnbull

Melbourne Cup winner Efficient declared himself back in town with a sensational win in today's Group 1 Turnbull Stakes at Flemington.

The talented grey, who flew home to win the 2007 Melbourne Cup, had been out of the winners circle since then but put himself right back on track for this year's race with his win today.

It was a perfect ride by Nick Hall, winning for his godfather and Efficient's owner Lloyd Williams

Settling well back early and a long way from the free running Maldivian, Efficient was eased into the clear at the 600m mark.

Turning midfield, he sprouted wings late and grabbed a last stride win over Predatory Pricer, who looked home after drawing clear of Maldivian.

Predatory Pricer held second while Scenic Shot grabbed third in a tight photo over Maldivian, Red Lord and Baughurst.

The disappointment of the race was Melbourne Cup favourite Vigor, who was awkwardly placed on the inside in the straight but did little and finished well back.

Efficient's stablemate Zipping and Cest La Guerre ran well but the winner now firms significantly for the Cups in what was just his third run of the spring.

“What can you say – it was a great ride, a great win and he's on track, obviously,” Nick Williams said.

“We thought he'd run a big race, in fact all three of our have done well. But Efficient is back to his best and there's plenty of improvement yet.”

Williams said Efficient Horseform would likely have only one more run – in the Cox Plate – before tackling the Melbourne Cup where he is topweight with 58kg.

Markets reacted swiftly and promoted Efficient to the new Melbourne Cup favourite – Betchoice winding in his price to $11.00 while Vigor is now second favourite at $12.00.
