Freedman Serious About The Comedian

Michael Freedman-trained The Comedian made it back-to-back wins when he took out the $95,000 Panasonic Systems Professional Stakes over 1400m on Sunday.

Enjoying a good run behind the speed for Joao Moreira, The Comedian, once clear in the straight, raced away to record a three-and-a-half length victory over Apache Crown (Matt Kellady) with Silveron Wings (Shafiq Rusof) a length-and-a-half away third.

The victory of The Comedian rang up a treble for Singapore's leading jockey Joao Moreira who has now ridden 129 winners for the year.

Freedman said he may look to bigger riches now with The Comedian following this victory and named the Group 2 EW Barker Trophy over 1400m on November 11 as a possible target.

It is a race Freedman won last year with Any Humour.

“I said to the owners before the race that if he ran well and pulled-up OK then we might have a look at something a big richer,” said Freedman.

“The EW Barker could be the right sort of race for him. He could get into it with a lightweight and it is around his pet distance.”

Freedman said The Comedian had hit a “purple patch of form” after initially winning at his first start in Singapore before losing his form.

“He came up here from Melbourne with a bit of a wrap on him but also with a few issues,” said Freedman.

“He's a long-backed sort of horse and (brother) Lee said to me when he came up that he's got a few back problems that need to be managed.

“He's also had bruised feet which we have got right and the little bit of give in the track certainly is a plus.”

The Comedian gave jockey Vlad Duric his 200th winner in Singapore when successful on September 18, but Duric elected to ride Mr Raffles for Steven Burridge which finished a fading fifth after leading.

A five-year-old by Encosta De Lago from the Rory's Jester mare How Funny, The Comedian has now raced in Singapore on nine occasions, registering three wins and three minor placings and prizemoney of around $185,000 for the Mummify Stable.
