Krayzelburg in the swim at the Valley

Krayzelburg, named after the US Olympic champion backstroker, landed his first city win in the Sydney Entertainment Centre Trophy (1600m) at Moonee Valley.

Krayzelburg, named after the US Olympic champion backstroker, landed his first city win in the Sydney Entertainment Centre Trophy (1600m) at Moonee Valley.

The Armidale four-year-old is raced by top Australian swimmer Scott Miller and a group of swimming coaches including Queenslander Scott Volkers, Geoff Salter and Brian Sutton.

Mornington trainer Gary McGreal explained that Miller and his partners have sent him six horses to train and Krayzelburg had been the best performed to date.

Jockey Malcolm Pay made the most of his one mount at the meeting on Krayzelburg (9-2) who settled back in eighth place before taking off and reaching the lead on the home turn.

The gelding held on to score by 1-1/4 lengths from Batarshi with topweight Shellshocked a short neck away third.

McGreal said he thought that Krayzelburg was severely weighted with 57.5kg in the Class Six event after winning with 58kg in Class Four grade on his home track earlier this month.

"But the handicapper was right again," he said.

Meanwhile, apprentice Nicholas Ryan shot further clear in the race for the apprentices' title with a winning double, taking his tally for the season in Melbourne to 42, eight-and-a-half ahead of his nearest rival Blake Shinn.

Ryan's winners were Tuscanna (20-1) who led all the way in the Showfreight Flying (1000m) for trainer Robert Smerdon and Llanga (4-1 eq fav) who led throughout in the St George Bank Hcp (1600m) for trainer Tony Vasil.
