The 1600m at G1 level for three-year-old fillies only, is named after the quality racemare Flight, a daughter of Royal Step that between 1943-47 was a crowd favourite and consummate performer.

Among her seventeen premier (black type equivalent) wins was back-to-back success in the W. S. Cox Plate's of 1945-46.

The Flight Stakes has been run since 1947 and was first taken out by Nizam's Ring, which was dominant over her age and sex that year, taking out the VRC Oaks, Wakeful Stakes and One Thousand Guineas.

Putoko won in 1950 and two years later, the daughter of Sir Crusoe (NZ), would capture the Brisbane Cup (3200m).

1995 saw Brimses win the Flight Stakes and she would go on and take out the One Thousand Guineas as well that season, as did Reveille (1964) and Goleen (1984).

Amneris (1957), Weeamera (1959), Sun Sally (1977) and La Caissiere (1983) would each take out the Wakeful Stakes, along with the Flight Stakes in their three-year-old season.

Wenona Girl scored in 1960 and this daughter of Wilkes (FR) would turn out to be a quality filly and racemare.

She would win the Rosehill Guineas, One Thousand Guineas, Wakeful Stakes and Adrian Knox Stakes, amongst other age group races.

Then as a racemare she won the George Main Stakes, George Adams Stakes, All-Aged Stakes, Futurity Stakes, C F Orr Stakes, as well as two Rawson and VRC Lightning Stakes.

There were also many other black type wins for this sprinter-miler-middle distance performer.

Hoa Hine won the Flight Stakes in 1961 and would take out the Queensland Oaks the following year in the autumn, as did A Little Kiss (1989)

Flying Fable scored in 1968 and won the AJC Oaks the following year in the autumn.

Cap D'Antibes win in 1974 was improved upon the following year, with sprinting success in the VRC Newmarket and Lightning Handicaps, as well as the middle distance Kewney Stakes.

1986 saw the Golden Slipper winner Bounding Away reproduce her juvenile form and take out the event, with the grey daughter of Biscay, also going on to take out the AJC Oaks and Orlando Classic.

1987 saw Judyann prevail and she would also take out at G1 level, the WA Oaks that year.

Research won in 1988 and the daughter of Imperial Prince (IRE) was dominant that season, against the boys too, taking out the VRC and AJC Oaks, as well as the AJC Derby.

The bay filly also won the Wakeful Stakes and Furious Stakes in her three-year-old year.

The Marscay chestnut filly Triscay looked good as a juvenile before going on the rampage as a three-year-old, taking out the Flight Stakes, along with the AJC Oaks, Queensland Oaks and the Australian Guineas.

Triscay also as a broodmare left the G1 winner La Baraka, which took out the AJC Galaxy Handicap in 1998.

Electrique won in 1991 and the won the G1 Ansett Stakes the following year in the autumn against her own age group and sex.

1992 and Slight Chance won the Flight Stakes, going on to win at G1 that season, the VRC Oaks, the Queensland Oaks and the Ansett Stakes.

A deadheat in 1996 between Dashing Eagle and Assertive Lass was notable for other reasons too.

Dashing Eagle would also take out the One Thousand Guineas and was out of La Caissiere, a former winner of the Flight Stakes.

Assertive Lass would win the Coolmore Classic at G1 in 1987.

1998 was a running of the Flight Stakes that started the meteoric rise of Sunline, to champion racemare status and a darling of the turf.

Sunline would end up a thirteen time G1 winner, with two W.S. Cox Plates a highlight, along with a second Doncaster and a Hong Kong Mile.

She is the leading Australasian stakemoney winner of all time.

The Sunline rose in 1998 and never really set until 2002.

Another Golden Slipper winner in Ha Ha took out the Flight Stakes in 2001, with the bay filly giving Danehill (USA) further G1 success.

Royal Purler, a daughter of Hector Protector (USA), surprised a few in 2002 in taking out the G1 feature.

Former South African trainer David Payne provided the winner in 2003 with Zabeel filly Unearthly who overpowered her rivals easily in the last 200m.

In 2004, impressive filly Lotteria went into the race unbeaten, which included the Spring Stakes at Newcastle.

While she turned in a big effort to win at Broadmeadow, her win in the Flight was devastating, running away with a seven-length margin which could have been further had she not been eased down.

Left in her wake were Cincinnati Gal and Covertly.

Lotteria, another feature winner for top trainer Gai Waterhouse, was interestingly the first Group 1 winner of hot sire Redoute's Choice.

She returned in the autumn to win the Surround Stakes before finishing sixth in the Coolmore Classic, runner-up in the Arrowfield Stud Stakes and sixth in the AJC Oaks behind Dizelle.

Valuable broodmares start in this race and increase their value several fold by winning, while many a fine future racemare has displayed her potential here as well.

Dominant three-year-old fillies rarely reign supreme as older mares but there have been a few starting with this race, that have delivered big time for several more seasons.

Win the Flight and you will be all right, when it comes to the worth of your filly.

There are strong results to say the One Thousand Guineas and Wakeful Stakes winners can be found crossing the line first in the Flight Stakes.

The Gimcrack Stakes interestingly came up too many times to ignore, as a good source of Flight Stakes winners.
