The Group One Honda Goodwood Handicap was first run in 1881 and was won by D.O.D., a son of Panic (GB), and has never altered from the initial distance of 1200m.

The sprint feature was not held between 1886-88 and obviously 1942-43, due to war time.

Only two horses have won the race twice with Mostyn (1894-95), a son of Clairvaux (GB) and Musket Belle (1911-12), a daughter of Pistol (GB).

Mostyn also won a Toorak Handicap in 1895.

Aurie's Star won the Goodwood Handicap in 1940 and the son of Stardrift (GB), had in previous seasons taken out the Oakleigh Plate twice and the VRC Newmarket Handicap.

Tango Miss, a daughter of Gaul (GB) won in 1972, having two years earlier taken out the VRC One Thousand Guineas (1600m).

More recognisable modern winners include Romantic Dream (1977), Boardwalk Angel (1989), Rubiton's half brother Euclase (1992) and the durable pair of Bellzevir (1997) and Marstic (2000).

The sire Bellotto (USA) has provided two of the last six winners with Bellzevir and last year's popular winner Zip Zip Aray.

Double figure odds winners are not unusual in the Goodwood and lightweights have a very sound record but there have been some recent boilovers in the race.

Centisle was at 40-1 when winning in 1995 but one year earlier saw Ambala score at 60-1.

The leading trainer with five wins is Walter Hickenbotham and they were achieved in the first decade of the twentieth century.

Finland (1901), Footbolt (1902), Step Out (1906), Truce Scout (1909) and Lord Derby (1910) were the quintet.

The best recent training record belongs to the "old master" George Hanlon with three wins, namely Centisle (1995), Boardwalk Angel (1989) and Spectrum (1998).

Melbourne Cup winning rider John Letts holds the record for a jockey in the Goodwood with five wins in the event.
