The G3 1200m for juveniles has only been going since 1987 but got a dream start when the winner was none other than Kaapstad (NZ), in what was then called the National Stakes.

The colt won the VRC Sires' Produce and Ascot Vale in the same season and was able to win at G3 twice as a three-year-old distance in the Birthday Cup (2000m) and the Rain Lover Plate (2200m).

Kaapstad, a son of Sir Tristram (IRE), was by the broodmare gem Eight Carat (NZ) and is part of the most successful family in the southern hemisphere.

His siring deeds since have produced G1 winners such as Catalan Opening, Golden Sword, Kaaptive Edition, Love Dance, Sprint By, Tall Poppy and Vegas.

1992 saw Mookta winning and in the next two years he would win twice at G1 level in the Oakleigh Plate and the VRC Newmarket Handicap.

The bay stallion by Jugah (USA) would then go on to a successful stud career.

From 1995-98 the race became known as the SGIC Stakes and some handy fillies and later racemares would prevail.

Will Fly (1996) would add another four G3 victories too her name in the following two seasons, including the Adelaide Guineas (1600m) and Tristarc Stakes (1400m).

La Baraka won in 1997 and the daughter of Euclase would compile a solid black type record with her crowning glory coming in the G1 Galaxy in 1998.

Spargo won in 1999 and the race that year was called the Stillwell Stakes and the Rory's Jester colt would take out the G2 Ascot Vale (1200m) the next season.

2000 saw a return to the name National Stakes and Super Elegant won like a horse headed places. The son of Mister C. (USA) is racing well now and won the G3 Rubiton Stakes (1100m) this season.

2001 saw the race become known as The Jansz and Russian Caravan scored.

The daughter of Dehere (USA) is proving to be an honest racemare.

The Carnegie (IRE) colt Rohaytan won The Jansz last year for trainer Robbie Laing by half a length from Blur.

A couple of stallion careers were started by winning The Jansz and several fillies, went on with it as racemares, before entering the broodmare paddock.
