Thursday, 29 July 2010: King Torus continued the incredible domination of Richard Hannon and Richard Hughes with juveniles this season when running out a wide-margin winner of the Group 2 Vintage Stakes (1400m).
It was a landmark 50th Glorious Goodwood success for Hannon, and his first victory in the Group 2 in 24 years.
King Torus has now won three of his four starts and William Hill cut the son of Oratorio to 20-1 from 33-1 for the Guineas. Blue Square make him a 16-1 shot for the same race.
Hughes went to secure the rail and the lead from stall six, but 8-1 shot Stentorian showed more urgency under Frankie Dettori and the pair set a good pace at the head of the seven-runner field.
The field grouped up just after the three-pole but that was short-lived, because with a furlong and a half still to run Hughes sent 11-4 King Torus clear and he drew away from his rivals for a six-length victory.
Hughes said: "It was serious performance. everybody wanted to make the running - I was going a good clip and Frankie wanted to make it - so we were flying.
"He's a Classic contender after that. I haven't done the last two furlongs at Goodwood as fast as that in a long time , not in a seven furlong race."
Richard Hannon jnr said: "That was very impressive with a 3lb penalty. We'll either go for the Racing Post Trophy or the Dewhurst.
"He's a very laid back horse, like all Oratorios; he saves his best for the racecourse and you wouldn't know what's under the bonnet. He'll just get better and better."
The 6-4 favourite Crown Prosecutor was the victim of some buffeting on the bend into the straight, after which Kieren Fallon struggled to keep him on a straight line.
Brian Meehan, trainer of Crown Prosecutor, said: "It was a tough race and I thought he was brought down at one stage. You couldn't expect him to run his race after that.
"He's a nice tough horse and he'll come back from that."
Mark Johnston said: "Stenorian has been crying out to run over further and we'd probably think about the Royal Lodge Stakes at Ascot in September."
