UK: Double Dead Heat At Goodwood

Saturday, 4 August 2012: Dead-heats are rare enough, but Glorious Goodwood witnessed two in one afternoon when both the RSA Thoroughbred Stakes and the closing Betfred Bonus King Bingo Handicap saw joint winners.

The latter case of evens-stevens involved the Alan Jarvis-trained Lady Gibraltar and Jwala, from Robert Cowell's stable. For Jarvis this was the second winner of the week on the downs, and it was also a double over two days for his 7lb claiming stable apprentice Michael Murphy, 19.

Jarvis said: "She is very game because she was drawn on the outside and had to race on her own, but it worked out. The only reason she wears a visor is not because she's ungenuine, but as a two-year-old she swerved across the course when the jockey picked up his stick. Now she wears a visor to help her concentrate on the job.

"She'll go on any track and is very well balanced. She's a big filly who tries her heart out and she's the first horse who has run for her owner, so he's been very lucky."

Of his young jockey, Jarvis said: "Michael is very talented - I've got him well tied down [to preserve his claim] and the owners think he has a big future."

Murphy, who joined Jarvis from his home in Ireland in March, said: "It's unbelievable - I didn't think I'd got up until one stride past the line.

"I've no regrets about coming to Britain now. Please God I ride another winner tomorrow."
