2014 Melbourne Cup - My Ambivalent Back On Track

Connections believe My Ambivalent is back on track for the Melbourne Cup after a stone bruise forced her out of the Caulfield Cup.

Roger Varian’s assistant David Eustace is pleased with the mare’s recovery at Werribee following the set back.

“We were very disappointed she didn’t get there (Caulfield Cup),” Eustace said.

“She missed by a small margin.

“She bruised her foot and missed three days of work. If it was just two we may have got there.

“She is training good though and is back on track now.”

Missing the Caulfield Cup does create queries for the daughter of Authorized however contesting the Melbourne Cup first up since June is not one of them according to Eustace.

“It is a bit alien to you guys doing that (first up over 3200m) but she actually runs very well fresh,” Eustace said.

“If you look at her form she has always run well with a break.

“We are not too concerned about her being fit enough. It is the fact she won’t have had the experience of racing around a track like this and has never run two miles either so we are stepping into the unknown.

“My gut feeling is if she settles in the race she will stay the trip. That is going to be the key.”

My Ambivalent is currently quoted at $51 for the Melbourne Cup with TAB Sportsbet Fixed Odds.

Regular rider Andrea Atzeni will partner the five-year-old.

“We are going to bring over Andrea Atzeni,” Eustace told Sky Sports Radio.

“He is her regular rider. He hasn’t got any experience riding in Australia but he has got a very good head on him and knows her well.

“I think that is the key to her more than having a jockey who knows the track. She takes a little bit of understanding.

“She can behave badly at the track but it has never actually affected her performance.

“She ran third in the Sheema Classic and she behaved pretty awfully to be honest.”
