Melbourne Cup Winners - What did or do they do into retirement?

Let's Elope, winner of the big race in 1991, enjoyed her life as a broodmare. She produced Ustinov who was placed in four G1 races including a Yalumba Stks and Caulfield Guineas, both times behind Lonhro. She died in 2016.

Arwon retired in Queensland with his owners until returning to the property of his trainer George Hanlon at Leopold near Geelong.

Bart Cummings had 12 Melbourne Cup winners of which Rogan Josh is still alive. Sadly Viewed died within 18 months of his win. Saintly and Let's Elope within the last couple of years.

Kingston Rule, who scored in 1990 in what is still the fastest metric Cup time, was one of the few Cup winners to go to stud. He was superbly bred by Secretariat out of Rose Of Kingston.

2001 winner Ethereal, who became one of the few to have won the Caulfield Cup/Melbourne Cup double, went straight to be a mum following the end of her racing career to Pencarrow Stud in New Zealand. She was then busy, with foals already to race to various stallions.

The Lindsay Park establishment have had a good association with the Melbourne Cup, with the late Colin Hayes winning in 1980 with Beldale Ball and six years later with At Talaq, before son David scored his first win in the race with Jeune in 1994.

Beldale Ball went to stud in the USA while At Talaq retired to the country property but both have now passed on.

Ethereal

After spending two years at Lindsay Park, where he produced the likes of Mummify, Jeune moved to Collingrove Stud in Victoria which was a joint venture between Lindsay Park and Swettenham Stud.

Doriemus, winner of the 1995 Cup on a wet track, initially went to New Zealand following his racing career, before moving to a property owned by Simon O'Donnell. He passed away within the last decade.

Like many of the more popular winners of the race, he made the odd celebrity appearance on feature race days.

1992 winner Subzero, one of the most popular as are all the grey gallopers, had a busy life since retiring from racing and wasn't far from the track.

Jeune

"Subbie" worked as a clerk of the course and did plenty of promotional work for the feature carnivals but he had serious health issues in recent years.

The relaxed grey was particularly popular with the younger generation as they got the chance to pat a wonderful animal. His work within the community such as in nursing homes and with disabled children was remarkable. He lost his mate Graham Salisbury in June 2020 and then Subzero died in August 2020.

Might And Power too was so well admired and lived a life of luxury until he passed on at Living Legends in April of 2020.

Tawriffic, winner of the race in 1989, was exported to Ireland in 1999 as a National Hunt stallion.

Empire Rose, winning of the race the previous year, went to stud in NZ where she was a broodmare before passing away in 2002.

Jezabeel, a well-bred daughter of Zabeel from New Zealand, scored a gutsy win in the 1998 Melbourne Cup before heading off to stud.

1987 winner Kensei spent many years making the odd appearance at feature NSW country meetings.

Makybe Diva, the historic winner of the race in 2004, 2005 and 2006, retired following her record breaking third win to start a new chapter in her life as a broodmare.

She settled into owner Tony Santic's property near Geelong in Victoria, aptly named "Makybe", where she has produced several foals.

Dunaden

The 2006 winner Delta Blues, and runner-up and stablemate Pop Rock, both returned home to Japan.

The 2007 winner, grey stayer Efficient, was on track to defend his crown until just days before the race when suffering a fetlock injury. He has been such an amazing old horse who only this year was unlucky into second in the two mile Sydney Cup. He only retired in 2012.

Shocking is now at stud in New Zealand where there is more appeal for a staying sire. Fiorente is a bit the same, standing at stud as does Americain.

Sadly 2011 winner Dunaden died in a paddock accident in 2019.

Many of Lloyd Williams winners like Efficient, Almandin etc spend their days at the Living Legends property in Melbourne.
