Waller leads Cup week Group One winners

Melbourne Cup week Group One winners have been shared around with Chris Waller the only trainer to prepare two.

Chris Waller has come out on top as the only trainer with more than one Group One win during Melbourne Cup week.

Sydney's premier trainer won his first Victoria Derby with Preferment and the Coolmore Stud Stakes with Brazen Beau.

There were 37 races over the Cup carnival with Waller and Adelaide's Phillip Stokes sharing the honours with four wins apiece.

From a team of six horses, Stokes had three individual winners, Eclair Big Bang, Held Hostage and Hucklebuck, with the latter adding the Group One Emirates Stakes on the final day to his Yellowglen win a week earlier.

Damien Oliver was the leading jockey of the VRC carnival with a double on the final day giving him six winners for the week.

Oliver and Hugh Bowman were the leading Group One riders with two each. Oliver won the Mackinnon Stakes on Happy Trails and the Derby on Preferment, a ride Bowman missed through suspension.

Bowman bounced back with victories on Set Square in the VRC Oaks and Terravista in the Darley Classic.

International riders Joao Moreira and Ryan Moore also grabbed Group One wins with Moreira on Brazen Beau and Moore taking the biggest race of all, the Melbourne Cup on Protectionist.

Only four trainers, Stokes, Waller, Leon and Troy Corstens and Tony McEvoy prepared multiple winners over the four days.

Oliver also claimed a fourth Ron Hutchinson Excellence Award after wins in 2003, 2011 and 2012.

The award is decided by Hall of Fame jockey Hutchinson for for riding excellence in Group One races.
