James Mcdonald's quest to land his 100th Sydney metropolitan win of the season will have to wait for another day after he fell just short at Canterbury.

The champion jockey had the milestone in his sights with victory aboard the Chris Waller-trained Tinnie Winnie in the third race on Wednesday, taking his season tally to 99.

But he was unable to add to his haul, coming up just short in the final event when finishing a narrow second aboard the Waller-trained Yggdrasil.

McDonald needs just one more Sydney winner to notch triple figures for the fourth consecutive season, a feat only ever achieved by Darren Beadman, who managed it in five consecutive terms from 2002-03 to 2006-07.

Beadman also rode more than a century of Sydney winners when he claimed back-to-back titles in 1994-95 and 1995-96.

McDonald will now have to wait at least another week for his next opportunity.

He is not riding in Sydney on Saturday and is instead heading to the feature meeting at Eagle Farm where he has mounts in nine of the 10 races, headlined by Zaaki in the Group 1 Doomben Cup.
