Having grown up in Qld, I was brought up using the TAB and Unitab. I now live in the UK and cannot believe how much better my punting options are over here. For starters, there are at least 5 different 'big' bookies that I can walk into and get a bet on with. There are also at least a dozen internet based operators that offer a far better service than that of the TABs.

I know that there are several corporate bookmakers that provide a decent internet betting service, but I still dont think that they rival many of the UK based operators.

Last week I placed a couple of bets on the Melbourne Cup with bookmakers over here and got a bigger price than was available in Australia, but also with eachway terms of 1/4 1,2,3,4- thats right FIRST 4 PLACES.

Does anyone else bet with UK bookmakers? Surely it makes sense when we are always trying to gain a slight edge.

Depends where I am. At the track it's bookies or tote. At home, work or on the road it can be Tab, phone account, or online. Betfair can get a run from time to time as well. I'm not a big punter and tend to be a quaddie man so the Tab does me most of the time. I generally only go hard for the win and place when I am at the track.

Bigdaddy,

I have used Ladbrokes for about 5 years now. I love the each way for the first 4 in the cup - have backed Zipping e/w in the last 2 cups.

The problem with the TAB's fixed odds is they are protecting the shareholder - they hit the panic buttons if they get a $500 bet on a 20/1 shot.

At the pub its UniTab (unfortunately), the track its Unitab or the bookies, and at home its ALWAYS Sportingbet, usually using their maxiDiv which pays out the highest of the 3 TABs

Im in Qld now, and Unitab sucks. Small pools and therefore bad odds.

Canbet gives me more options, better tote odds guaranteed , fixed price, top fluctuation, future betting. And you can withdraw online.

Cheers.

So do those of you punters that dont use UK bookies feel silly for not doing so? Particularly for betting eachway on the Melbourne Cup? UK bookies also leave these markets up and only make changes when they see money.

Personally, I thnk that the Aussie books are just cowards and should offer 4 places for their antepost markets.

Big D or Rex, can you access the Aussie TAB's and other form sites, apart from R & S, from the UK, or is there some restriction.

Will you see the Grand Final, live, from over there.

Do you get to see any Aussie races over there, if not, can you listen on the net.

It may sound obvious, but the BBC restricts Aussies, in a number of ways.

Khaptingly, You obviously don't travel much you poor sod. You can bet on any Tab, watch racing via the Tab website and the Bigpond/TVN website from the UK (I did it last week). It is not that difficult with a bit of decent bandwidth. Is generally a good way to start the day on a saturday in the UK!

Khaptingly,

There is no restriction on accessing racing sites in the UK. The gambling restrictions are very liberal, which is terrific. No doubt you would be winning hundreds of millions instead of tens of millions if you were over here.

Setanta has coverage of the NRL and AFL and both Grand Finals will be shown live.

Like Khrapper, the self acknowledged punting guru of this forum, I bet with my local illegal SP bookie.

I also lay a variety of options and bet back for and against my original bets on a variety of international and local sporting events, and claim to make enormous profits on all of them.

I am either Hans Christian Andersen or one (or both, perhaps) of The Brothers Grimm.

Nige ;-)
