Early thoughts:

Dubai - This has been a good race for 3 year olds in recent years. I like the 2 who quinellaed the Ascot Vale, Scaredee Cat and Lago Delight - the one who draws the best barrier will probably be carrying mine.

Exceed & Excell is an interesting nomination. May well be too good, but young Sydney horses often struggle around Caulfield and his action suggests to me that he could fall into this category - if he starts he will probably be unders.

It's a bit sad that the only horse who was given 55 or more kilos is Fields Of Omagh - a horse with no group 1's to his name. Doesn't say a lot for the quality of the race.

Underwood - barriers and track conditions will be crucial here, I'll stay out at this stage but the Craiglee runners look to be the major contenders.

Gloaming - I've liked Handsome Ransom from his first run and really liked the way he got to the line last start. I'll probably be backing him.

Tea Rose - Hard to go past Shamekha although Diamond Hailey is an interesting nomination.

You are right. They are order of entry not barrier. Lucky I didn't put a load on! Thanks Vanilla.

True Glo has a good chance on Saturday but I reckon he would be an absolute moral for the Toorak. Does anybody know of any bookies offering early markets? True Glo could even be a good show for the Epsom, does anyone know if Freedman is aiming him for the race?

although i rate exceed and excel very very highly (have him blackbooked right from the start in fact), i think theres a little query about him getting a strong 1400m and we will find out on sunday. if he's given a soft run in front i think he will win.

Re: Dubai Racing Club Cup

Titanic Jack and True Glo looks the logical quinella here.
The four year old's are already showing in general they are a better crop than the older horses (look at the winners in 90% of the open group and listed races this season) and with 53.5 the 3yr olds are not getting enough weight of them.

Just had a look at the acceptances for Saturday.

What's going on with Sydney racing? The numbers in their fields have been poor for a while, but the problem seems to be getting worse.

On Saturday they have a major meeting with 6 of the 8 races offering black type. Of these, 4 are Group 2 and 2 are Listed. Despite this they only have 70 horses accepting, less than 9 runners a race on average. 3 of the 8 races will not offer a third place dividend, even before scratchings.

The feature Hill Stakes only has 5 runners, none of whom are champions who would be frightening off competitors.

The numbers really are cause for concern.

Melbourne on Sunday has a programme also offering 6 black type events (2 Group 1's, 2 Group 3's and 2 Listed). They have 131 runners in 8 races, an average of over 16 per race. They also had horses balloted out and emergencies in 3 races.

Sydney has no other racing on the weekend, Melbourne also has a Saturday meeting that has attracted 102 runners (average 12-13 per race)!

The disparity seems to be widening. Any opinions?

Thought Squillani would go OK in the Dubai, mummify near peak for the underwood and shamekha in the tea rose after beating regimental gal.

Also good work dark horse for having these fields available on tuesdays!!

8 RACES. 71 ACCEPTORS. That's an average field of less than 9 horses per race!! Appalling.
