Message: Part of Andrew Hilditch's recent press conference. Sorry I missed it. Clearly he has the ideas and the answers we should expect from a national chairman of selectors and we must continue to place our faith in his great vision and judgement. --------- You say you've done a good job as a selection panel, what selections were good?
"We were outplayed. We weren't good enough to beat them. We didn't bowl, bat or field well enough."
So then what was good about selections?
"If we didn't play to the best of our ability we wouldn't win the Ashes and we didn't play to the best of our ability. England played as well as a side can play. They were extraordinarily good."
Who takes the blame for the Ashes?
"We needed to play better, as simple as that."
The coach, captain, anyone?
"I don't know why you want to ask that question. The reality is we were outplayed by a better side. We have to deal with it and get better."
What needs changing?
"You can't get away from it, we were totally outplayed. England were fantastic, bowled, batted and fielded better than us.
"We just have to get back to being the best at the basic skills of the game as we possibly can be. Certainly we have a talented squad that can do it, but we were totally outplayed."
Will you stay on?
"I have the same passion and enthusiasm I've always had. I've been doing the job a while and I love it. It's a very demanding time for Australian cricket, it's an obvious statement, but in the same breath it's an exciting time. I see it as a really demanding task to try and get us back to where we were in world cricket.
"It's a big task and I intend to follow it through."
Do you endorse Ricky Ponting as skipper?
"We haven't got a Test series for about seven months. At the end of the World Cup we'll sit back like we do every season and review the position going forward in a range of issues."

Message: Hilditch is not the problem. The person who appointed him is the problem. Nielsen is not the problem. The person who appointed him is the problem.
Oh, the dimwits who gave Nielsen a 3 year contract extension before the Ashes started will correct their error with a million dollar contract payout ... but they will still be there.

Message: The selectors (and others of course) are both responsible and culpable, not just for the Ashes selection debacle but for waiting until it hit the fan before thinking about grooming replacements. Hilditch is essentially asking Australian cricket fans to do as he and his cohorts did - stick with the same old tried/tired mob, all will be okay. We saw the result, and we don't like the solution.
A new broom is needed, and Hilditch should go asap. He's obviously praying for a level of redemption in the World Cup but nothing which happens on the continent will atone for their mishandling of the spinners and fastbowlers, or their selections of clearly out-of-form batsmen.
