A sad day indeed. The owners and trainer must be devastated. What a great mare who certainly gave me my finest day in racing winning the 2011 Cox Plate. Thank you Pinker Pinker. RIP

If Crystal Lily and Pinker Pinker were super rich human athletes it would be a major scandal. The edge female horses have in racing is not only devaluing colts and condemning vast numbers of them to the doggers, it is also putting brilliant females at risk.

The Inglis Easter sales have sold thousands of well-bred colts over the last 15 years, and of them, possibly two are top class commercial sires. The rest get gelded, devalue enormously, and have to compete against fillies under different rules.

A knockabout punter was telling me yesterday that he was contemplating buying a share (5% for 7,000) in either a well-bred colt or filly to be trained by Australia's leading trainer. I told him that at 7,000, the colt would not even break him square if it won 300,000 in prizemoney, once all the bills, insurance, etc, including gelding, are taken into account. His best chance would be if it showed great promise and sold to Asia, and he might double his money. As it's definitely not going to be his call, and the other 19 owners never agree, he'll be stuck with a gelding whose prizemoney will be eaten up in big race noms/acceptances and training fees.

A filly however, finds it far easier to win blacktype relative to her ability, and is allowed to run on gear that geldings aren't.
Add to this residual value, and the choice isn't a hard one.

Still, Pinker Pinker was a good horse to me, and if this keeps happening, a scandal will definitely develop.
