Message: The Herald Sun seems to have a problem with Gai Waterhouse - always criticising her. She is a breath of fresh air(and I am from Melbourne) compared to many trainers who are so boring. And she is just a fantastic role model particularly for women.
I noted on Saturday morning on 927 that she would not speak with Matty Stewart and only Keith Hillier talked to her. But Stewart and Adam Hamilton were at it again on Sunday bagging her.

Message: Jdee,
Gai is her own worst enemy. She is always courting publicity. So, when her horses perform poorly, she is an easy target for criticism. The great eighteenth-century writer Samuel Johnson said of those writers who complained about poor book-reviews:
'an author comes uncalled before the tribunal of criticism and solicits fame at the hazard of disgrace.'
The same is true of Gai. She is caled a genius during the Sydney autumn carnival, and she does not demur. Come spring, her horses are all at sea and she lashes out at her critics. It is great that a woman is one of the country's top trainers, but to seek to protect her from criticism on the basis of her gender is itself sexist.

Message: And she was snippy with Keith Hillier too
I don't think that the Herald-Sun is that harsh on Gai - all they have done is had the temerity to point out that her horses have been huge floperoos in Melbourne, which is 100% true
Gai seems to think that the press exists to act as a publicity arm of her training operation, and that they are not entitled to criticise her
She has been coming here for a long time, talking her horses up, and they have failed
Perhaps if she was a bit more modest/realistic in what she said to the press, she would get a better run
After all, if you tell everyone your horses are champions, and then they fail, who should cop the blame ?

Message: Their attitudes probably sum up the mysoginist attitudes common in racing. Good on her for not talking to them. There are plenty of other media sources for her to speak to.
