Message: Shu and Phil,
Agree with your sentiments on both horses. The O/S runners have been doing the same long distance training for most of their careers and are used to it come race day.
Where as the Aust horses have more races programmed for them and take more benefit from a race than a track gallop. A trainer can put all the miles they like into a horse on the training track, but nothing substitutes real race conditions like they are used to.
I'd love to see a horse like Alcopop win, but skipping a run leading up to the race and go into it on such a long break could well be his undoing. If anything they should have sent him around in the MV Cup this week or even the Cox Plate.

Message: Alcopop.. by all reports.. is doing a LOT.. I mean a LOT work this week
I know it is not competitive racing.. but I do not think that the 24 day break will be given as an excuse
He was never entered for the CC...
We actually thought that he may had ended up in the MacKinnon... a couple wraps around the tail at about the 50 - 100m mark.. just to give him a blow out
No doubt we wait and see...
I was actually quite impressed with Efficent.. I think that Viewed got away with a poor CC... I statted than race and only had 4 possible's... Again.. 1st 2nd and 4th.. Vigor out because of it's Barrier

Message: Difference is Alcopop did it in a class 3,
not a group race. Winning first up is not significant in this instance because there are many cup winners that would have won a class 3 first up over 1200. How many cup winners have kicked their preps off in restricted company?
Going on his second up win in record time in a stakes race, i venture to say he probably would have gone close in a stakes sprint.
He just gives me the impression that he'll run well but the string of wins and the penalty to get him there may be a grand final in itself. Bit like Parramatta this year.

Message: Thinking about the last horses to have takled the Cup on such a long break (ignoring O/S visitors)
She's Archie went to the Cup from the Turnbull, admittedly after a setback and ran last.
On the 24 day break all the way back to 1977 Reckless went from the Caulfield Stakes to the Cup. Loomed up to win but condition I think gave out and the Bart stayer Gold and Black forged away to win.
I am going to be risking both Efficient (as impressive as he was) and Alcopop
