My old man use to spend hours fishing on beaches with us kids playing on the beach and in the surf besides him. The first thing he taught us, after first teaching us to swim, was how to identify a rip and not to struggle against it if caught in one. I can remember him always telling us to swim with the rip and to the side towards white water from which we could swim back to shore.
