The rankings cover those horses which either raced in or were trained in countries whose racing season runs from August 1 to July 31.

To merit inclusion, a horse must have been rated at 115 or above in the period under review by the World Thoroughbred Racehorse Rankings Conference.

The rankings are headed by the now retired Invasor at 129 for his win in the 2007 Dubai World Cup at Nad al Sheba in March.

The leading the Australian horses were El Segundo, Miss Andretti, Pompeii Ruler and Takeover Target all equally rated on 120.

The leading 3YOs were Haradasun, He’s No Pie Eater and Mentality all on 117.

Of the 65 horses making the listings 29 were Australian trained compared to only 16 in 2005/6 and nine in 2004/5.

A further six Australian bred horses trained in Hong Kong and Dubai were also listed as well as Delta Blues for his performance in winning the Melbourne Cup.

Racing Victoria's Greg Carpenter, who has represented Australia on the WTRR Conference since October 2005, said the listings provided ample proof Australian horses are now receiving the recognition their racetrack performances demanded both within Australia and on the world stage.

The Australian Racing Board chairman Bob Pearson acknowledged the work done by the ANZ Classifications Committee and in particular Greg Carpenter.

“The Australian Racing Board has been concerned for some time that Australian horses were not receiving sufficient acknowledgement for their achievements in the International Ratings and the WTRR.

"The ANZ Classifications Committee , and in particular its chairman Greg Carpenter are to be congratulated on the hard work that has led to this result in obtaining a better international understanding of the quality of the Australian horses that were assessed at the World Thoroughbred Rankings Conference," Pearson said.
