Thursday, 7 February 2008: The Jamie Edwards-trained Tarpins is likely to start favourite for the $200,000 Cadbury Tasmanian Derby at Tattersall's Park in Hobart on Saturday on the strength of a favorable barrier draw.
Tarpins drew barrier five which should allow jockey Dean Yendall to make use of the gelding's early speed and secure a prominent position early in the race.
The gelding has won and been placed at two of his past three starts and both were run over 2200 metres or beyond.
Last-start Sandown winner Arazamataz drew barrier 10 but as the Pat Carey-trained gelding is a get-back horse the wide draw shouldn't be a disadvantage.
Mega Boss, that ran third to Arazamataz last start, has drawn well in gate eight and is sure to vie for favoritism.
The David Hayes-trained Sieger Sieger will start from gate nine but his acceptance for the race might be seen as an afterthought.
South Australian-trained gelding Vision Of Flight was a shock scratching from the Hobart Guineas on race day due to him being kicked by another horse when being exercised in the parade ring.
The Darren Magro-trained gelding has drawn poorly in 13 of 16 but deserves a change of luck.
The Gary White-trained Beaconsfield has drawn ideally in gate one and this flashy chestnut gelding could be the surprise packet at big odds on the strength of his last start second in Hobart.
