MT WYCHEPROOF: Coffey Covets Hometown Win

Bookmark and Share

Wednesday, 29 October 2008: Swan Hill trainer Austy Coffey can picture the ideal moment; drinking celebratory ale out of the Mt Wycheproof Cup in his brother's backyard on Saturday night

Coffey grew up in Birchup, which is just 35km from Wycheproof in the expansive Mallee region. The Elders Mount Wycheproof Cup is his hometown cup.

“This is my local Cup that I want to win,” Coffey said as he prepares to saddle up Agents Dream and The Ruckman in Saturday's race.

“My brother Jim lives in Wycheproof (an Elders stock agent) and we have a fire in his backyard every year after Cup day.

“It is a great weekend for the local community and really is a reunion. People from all surrounding areas meet at Wycheproof for Cup Day.”

If Coffey is to enjoy a victory drink from the Mt Wycheproof Cup, his leading prospect would be the in-form 6YO gelding Agents Dream.

Connections recently purchased the horse with two Cups in mind – Manangatang and Wycheproof.

Two starts ago the Lacryma Cristi gelding Agents Dream finished second, just nosed out by Cocojet, in the Manangatang Cup before winning at Swan Hill last Saturday.

“He wasn't quite spot on at Manangatang and we're hoping he is more on the mark this week,” Coffey said.

“He is suited and starting to get fit. I checked out the track the other day and it looks in great nick, so we're hoping.”

Agents Dream has a career record of six wins and 10 placings from 44 starts.

Stablemate The Ruckman finished a half-length second behind Agents Dream on Saturday and definitely has his hoof on the till.

A 6YO gelding, The Ruckman burst onto the racing scene in 2006 with three wins and two second-place finishes at his first five starts.

Injury forced The Ruckman from the racetrack before he returned in April this year, with his last start suggesting he can return to that early form.

Coffey has finished a close second several times in the Mt Wycheproof Cup.

However, one of his great rivals for the race is former local Darren Weir, who has Boss Its Over and Racy Alice nominated for the Cup.

Weir, now based in Ballarat, grew up in Berriwillock, roughly 60kms from Mt Wycheproof racecourse.

“He has already won one so it is about time I got one too,” Coffey said.
