Thursday, 12 February 2009: The Tasmanian racing industry is showing its support for the victims of the Victorian bushfires and local members of emergency services who are helping to deal with the crisis.
Following TOTE Tasmania's decision to donate $50,000 to the appeal on
AAMI Hobart Cup day last Monday, the Tasmanian Racing Board has donated $7500, the Tasmanian Racing Club $5000 and the Tasmanian Turf Club $2500.
In addition, all gate takings from the harness meeting in Devonport on Sunday February 22 and the combined harness and greyhound meeting at Tattersall's Park on Monday February 23 will be donated to the appeal.
Other fund raising initiatives are planned for the meetings.
Tasmanian Racing Board CEO Gary Lottering said all members of the industry had been keen to actively support the appeal in whatever way they could.
“The daily media reports that detail what the victims of the bushfires are dealing with have been nothing short of horrific,” he said.
“Financial contributions are obviously one way to demonstrate our support.
“Also, the weekend's harness and greyhound meetings will recognise local emergency services and the contribution they are making in the Victorian communities and towns affected by the disaster.”
