Friday, 14 August 2009: Theseo's outstanding 2008/09 season was rewarded tonight when he was crowned New South Wales Champion Horse of the Year at a glittering function at the Grand Pavillion at Rosehill Gardens.

Trainer Gai Waterhouse and Star Thoroughbreds owner Denise Martin and a large group of owners were on hand to receive the state's most prestigious racing award.

As well as winning the feature award of the night, Theseo also captured the Middle Distance award while Waterhouse received the TJ Smith Medal as leading trainer.

Theseo beat out other category award winners Manhattan Rain, Samantha Miss, Zavite and Takeover Target to win the major award of the night.

The Danewin gelding stood out as the star performer for the season from a New South Wales based galloper with three Group One wins including wins in the Epsom Handicap and Ranvet Stakes.

A $120,000 purchase from the 2005 Magic Millions Yearling Sale at the Gold Coast, Theseo earned over $2 million during last season alone.

All up his record now reads out at eight wins and nine minor placings from just 30 starts. He's earned over $2.5 million for his 10 owners.

In May Theseo won the Hunter Valley Thoroughbred Breeders' Champion Racehorse of 2008/09.

Theseo's win in tonight's awards continued a winning run for graduates of Magic Millions Yearling Sale in Horse of the Year Awards around the country.

On Sunday night the globetrotting sensation Scenic Blast, a Perth Yearling Sale purchase, was announced as the Victorian Racehorse of the Year.

Phelan Ready and Swiss Ace will lead the charge for the Millions graduates at the Queensland Horse of the Year Awards this Saturday night.

"It's great to see our graduates have kicked away the awards season in style," Magic Millions Managing Director David Chester said.

"I'm thrilled that the expert voting panels are settling on horses like Theseo and Scenic Blast as the real stars of the season - I'm glad I wasn't alone in thinking that."

"Theseo's win caps another great season for Denise and Gai and their respective operations."

"Both are major supporters of Magic Millions and many of their stars were purchased from our sales around the country."
