The horse that had everybody talking about his untapped potential in the spring of 2005 has left
Richard Freyer's stables at Corowa in southern NSW to join Jarrod McLean's seaside team in Warrnambool.
The stable switch is a last ditch effort by his connections hoping McLean can find some of the old spark in the the ageing gelding.
[n]Leica Falcon joined the McLean stable last month and will resume serious work before Christmas.
“I got a phone call from the owners to see if I would be interested in training Leica Falcon,” McLean told the Warrnambool Standard.
“We are happy to give him a go and see what happens but at this stage we have got no expectations at all.
“We train our horses on the beach and we have had a little bit of success with horses like him in the past but there are no guarantees,
“The chances of him firing up are pretty slim but we will give it a go.
“His owners would just love to see him return to some of his best form.
Now an eight-year-old, Leica Falcon has not won for four years since his dynamic victory in the Winning Edge Herbert Power Handicap at Caulfield in 2005.
He then ran fifth in the 2005 Caulfield Cup and fourth in the 2005 Melbourne Cup but has since endured a litany of problems including stem cell tendon surgery and the frustrations of a prolonged EI quarantine.
