The family training team of father John and sons Wayne and Michael were the most prominent domestic buyers as they sought out prospects to join their Sydney and Melbourne stables.
Team Hawkes was quick into stride when they went to $700,000 for Lot 16, a colt by Redoute's Choice out of Liberty Rose.
“He's more of a staying type and we have his full sister at home that's shown a bit winning a few trials. We'll produce her in the spring," said
John Hawkes.
The next buy was Lot 46, a filly by Encosta De Lago out of Milanova, for $700,000.
“She's a well balanced filly with a great family. I hope she can run but if she doesn't she will certainly be worth a lot on the broodmare side," Hawkes said.
They also secured a Flying Spur-Negotiate filly before their most expensive purchase, a bay colt by Encosta De Lago out of Shania Dane for $740,000.
Hawkes trakined SHania Dane and said getting the colt was a special moment.
“I used to train his mum and being out of her it made him special. He's strong and might even run at two," Hawkes said.
Hawkes Racing was buying for local and overseas clients absed in Hong Kong.
“We are looking to try and win the Group races and we want to more quality than numbers," Hawkes said.
“We now have to get the results but the boys and I have been around a long time and we will get those results I'm sure."
