Stewards Order Barrier Test For Dariana

Bookmark and Share

Monday, 7 June 2010: Wayward filly Dariana must pass a barrier test before she can start in Saturday's $500,000 Queensland Derby at Eagle Farm.

Brisbane stewards today conducted an interview with Reg Fleming, representing the Bart Cummings stable, in respect to the circumstances surrounding Dariana's failure to jump with the field in the Queensland Oaks at Eagle Farm last Saturday.

Fleming argued that the filly had a previously unblemished barrier record and maintained that her behaviour last Saturday, when she turned her head into an adjoining stall as the gates opened and refused to jump, was out of character for the three-year-old.

The stewards considered the unique circumstances of the case and told Fleming they were aware of the intention to start the filly in the Queensland Derby.

However they advised Fleming that Dariana would be required to pass a barrier test under the supervision of stewards prior to racing again.

The ruling does not call for Dariana to start in a barrier trial. It is expected she will be put under the eye of stewards in a jump out from the gates at Eagle Farm on Tuesday or Wednesday.

In Melbourne the RAD Board hearing into a charge laid by the stewards against trainer Peter Moody will be held at 10.30am on Wednesday.

Moody is charged with a breach relating to a prohibited substance, being N-Butylhyoscine and Dipyrone, detected in a urine sample taken from Returntosender following the W.J Bill Adams Handicap at Caulfield on April 3.
