Thursday, 29 March 2012: Leading trainer Gai Waterhouse has called on Sydney-siders to join her for a free day of racing at Royal Randwick to celebrate April Fools' Day this Sunday.
The April Fools' Day Out promotion will see the Australian Turf Club (ATC) throw open the gates and provide entertainment including a jumping castle and face painting for the kids.
Gai said there was no better way to enjoy April Fools' Day than sharing a laugh and some winners at the races.
“It is a Fools' Day Out and what better day to be going to Randwick than on April 1?” Gai said.
“No it's not an April Fools' joke, it is for real and we are racing. There will be winners to be had and yes I'll supply them. Join me; entry is free for the Fools' Day Out. Come and have a laugh with us at the track.”
ATC Chief Executive Darren Pearce said Sunday was a great promotion aimed at encouraging as many people as possible to experience thoroughbred racing in person and have a laugh at the same time.
“There is some fabulous Group 1 racing on at the moment as part of the BMW Sydney Carnival and Flinders Lane Guineas Day at Rosehill Gardens on Saturday will be no exception,” Mr Pearce said.
“But for those interested in trying a day at the races for the first time or just looking for a fun day out on Sunday then head to Royal Randwick. The day will have a more relaxed feel than the BMW Sydney Carnival days and is a good chance to get up close to the horse and jockeys.
"Yes it is free entry for everyone and although it is April Fools' Day, we are not joking about that.”
