Sunday, 29 April 2012: Group One stars Jimmy Choux and Older Than Time have been retired after their defeats at Randwick on Saturday.

A stud career lies ahead for Jimmy Choux, last season's NZ Horse of the Year, after he dropped out in the G1 Queen Elizabeth Stakes to finish last behind the flying More Joyous.

Jimmy Choux dropped out after striking problems on the home turn when he awkwardly placed on the heels of More Joyous as she shifted ground.

He made contact with Speediness to his inside and then shifted out and buffeted Manighar and Secret Admirer on his outside, losing his momentum.

Trainer John Bary and owner Richard Wood reached the decision to retire Jimmy Choux on Sunday morning, reporting that they feel the four-year-old is not focusing on his racing.

Bary said the entire was not concentrating on racing and was showing all the signs of a stallion wanting to begin a breeding career.

A stud deal is yet to be finalised but major breeders will be lining up to secure the son of Thorn Park, who won over more than $2 million prizemoney and 12 races from 25 starts including five Group One events including the NZ Derby and Rosehill Guineas.

Trainer Gai Waterhouse announced the retirement of her good mare Older Than Time after she finished eighth in the Sydney Cup, a race she finished second in last year.

A post-race veterinary examination of the five-year-old Older Than Time revealed the stakeswinning mare to be mildly lame in the off foreleg after suffering a small laceration to her off hind pastern.

Older Than Time, by Don Eduardo, won five of her 22 starts.

In other post race developments from Saturday's Randwick meeting James Carr Stakes winner Angel Of Mercy pulled up lame while stewards are awaiting a report from the connections of 2010 Melbourne Cup winner Americain on their intentions with the stayer after his failure in the Queen Elizabeth Stakes.

A post-race veterinary examination of Angel Of Mercy revealed the filly to be mildly lame in the near foreleg, throwing a cloud over Queensland carnival plans for the filly.

Stewards have advised trainer Gerald Ryan that he must produce a veterinary clearance for Angel Of Mercy prior to its next start.

Lizzy Jelfs, representing trainer David Hayes, said Americain's immediate racing future will be discussed with the connections after his flat sixth in the Queen Elizabeth.

The Sydney Cup failure of the favourite Permit, who failed to complete the 3200m course after he was eased out of the race 1200m from the finish, has been attributed to a cast off fore plate that affected his action.

He was found to be sensitive in his off fore hoof after the race but trainer Chris Waller has called for a full vet check of the stayer including an endoscopic examination as he feels the horse may suffered a low grade cardiac arrhythmia.

Waller confirmed that Permit will be spelled.

stevez,
Had he not been an entire, he most likely wouldn''t have failed on the weekend. ”

I''d say that it was Jimmy Choux''s owner showing all the signs of wanting to begin a breeding career (with Jimmy) and protecting his record by retiring him. Had he not been an entire, he''d race on. His achievements don''t really warrant him being called a "champ" imo.

The dawdle and sprint didn''t suit Americain and he was squeezed out on the turn, only to get going again towards the end. Both he and Manighar should have been used more to make the race more genuine. ”

It''s very pleasing to read such news (about Jimmy Choux and Older Than Time) ... it shows that they did try their hearts out or there are genuine reasons for their failures ....! Now we await the postmortem findings on Permit ... ”

Spewing jimmy has been retired..!!! Surely one more crack at the cox plate was in order.. Might just have been that he wasn''t ready 2nd up etc...
I''m disappointed by that ”

The stewards report from this meet will make lengthy and fascinating reading. ”
