Thursday, 17 May 2012: Wyong Race Club has approved a massive increase in prize money for its two day spring carnival in September including a new feature race for mares over 1600 metres.
An additional $210,000 will be offered over the two days taking the total prizemoney for the carnival to $707,000.
Prize money on the Listed Carlton Mid Wyong Gold Cup (2100m) on Friday September 7 has been increased to $150,000, up from $120,000 last year.
The co-feature, the Listed McNamee Constructions Mona Lisa (1350m) for fillies and mares has been increased by $20,000 to $120,000.
The Central Coast Cool Rooms Da Vinci (1350m) for three year olds, introduced in 2011, goes up by $10,000 to $50,000 while prize money for the last of the Cup Day features, the Altona Electrics Springtime Stakes (1100m), has been lifted to $30,000.
Ladies Day on Thursday September 6 has received a massive boost with the introduction of the $100,000 La Giaconda over 1600 metres for mares.
The La Giaconda will significantly lift the profile of Ladies Day which always draws a big crowd because of the focus on the fashions in the field.
Rod Wicks, the chairman of Wyong Race Club, said there were exciting times ahead for racing and the size of the prize money increases reflected that.
“A big increase like this will not only lift the profile of the carnival but help all sectors of the industry,” Wicks said.
“We have a racing surface which many owners, trainers and jockeys rate as the best in NSW and we believe that warrants a carnival of this size and stature.
“Central Coast people love their racing and have thrown their support behind this carnival in the past. We believe this year's carnival will provide them with an even bigger and better racing experience.”
