Thursday, 17 May 2012: This weekend marks the end of an era for local racing with the running of the last Mildura Cup Carnival in autumn.
For years the Mildura carnival a May event staged on Saturday and Sunday between the major Warrnambool and Swan Hill carnivals.
However the carnival moves to a new slot as a Friday/Sunday event in August from next season.
The Mildura Racing Club plans to celebrate the last May carnival then focus all its energy into making the new dates a success.
Murray Mallee Racing's sales and marketing executive Sheree Keyte said the change of date had been well received..
“We've had a really positive reaction in relation to changing to August, closer to the spring racing carnival and closer to the better weather,” Keyte said.
"We will give May the farewell it deserves and then look forward to making a success of the new date in August.”
The weekend feature on Sunday is the $60,000 Euston Club Resort Mildura Cup (1400m) and has attracted a strong field with Magical Pearl heading a field that also contains the Mick Price-trained Faster Son, Bangerang Quickpic, classy South Australian mare Golden Penny and Cellarmaster.
