Wednesday, 6 June 2012: Training partners Barbara Joseph and Paul Jones have been very active in their purchase of yearlings this year with Joseph saying the future looks bright for the stable.
A number of yearlings have already ventured into the Joseph and Jones stable for light preparations with the mother and son team believing race debuts mid next season are a possibility.
The Canberra based partnership are still looking at selling shares for most of their yearlings with Joseph singling out a
Duke Of Marmalade Filly as one she is most looking forward to seeing at the races.
“There are still shares available in most of them,” Joseph said.
“The
Duke Of Marmalade I really like. There's still shares left in her – she's a lovely filly.
“If anyone's interested in shares they should give me a ring and we can organise a time to have a look at them.”
The training pair's most expensive buy this year has been a
Flying Spur colt purchased for $115,000 at the Magic Millions Yearling Sale on the Gold Coast in January.
“He is just a nice athletic colt out of a General Nediym mare, so he's bred for speed and we're expecting him to go well,” Joseph said.
“He's had one preparation already and he has shown us a little bit. He's gone back out again, and he'll come back in for his next preparation in a few weeks time.”
Another acquisition by Joseph and Jones worth mentioning was a Lonhro filly from the Sydney Classic Yearling Sale in February.
The dam of the filly, Commands Nothin' was trained by Joseph with the Canberra trainer set to continue training down the family line.
“She's very similar to her mother,” said Joseph.
“I'm very happy with her. She'll go back out shortly, and come back in and try and be ready for some of the two-year-old races around Christmas.”
The training partnership's second highest purchase came at the Australian Easter Yearling Sale in March when they bought a Myboycharlie colt for $50,000.
“He's very athletic and a lovely colt who has been gelded now,” Joseph said.
“He's been broken in and I haven't had him back yet, but he'll be coming back in work in a couple of weeks.
“We'll see him racing as a two-year-old, I think. He's looking strong enough.”
Of the yearling purchases made by the Joseph and Jones stable this year, three have been by the stallion Dane Shadow.
The stable has experienced success with the sire before, most notably with
Fill The Page
who saluted in the $200,000 Listed Canberra Cup (2000m) in March.
Joseph said she is confident they can experience more success with the Dane Shadow progeny in the near future.
The first foal out of former Joseph stable star
Belong To Many
went through the ring at the Australian Easter Yearling Sales.
While Joseph was interested in the More Than Ready filly out the multiple stakes-winning mare she was the under bidder in the lot which failed to meet her reserve of $175,000.
“She is very similar to her mother, but went for too much money for me to buy - a bit too much to spend on a first foal I think,” she said.
Asked whether any of the stables newest yearlings could be up to racing in Canberra's flagship $250,000 Listed Black Opal Stakes in March, Joseph said while many have shown plenty of potential she does not want to make any bold predictions just yet.
“It's still early days but anything can happen,” she said.
