Saturday, 30 June 2012: Leading jockey Hugh Bowman's thirst cost him a $1000 fine at Rosehill on Saturday.
Bowman was fined $1000 by stewards after he came back to scale overweight after riding More Rocco into fourth place in the Chiko Handicap won by Kirinita.
The Sydney riding premiership leader had been battling the `flu through the week and was battling dehydration after his early rides at Rosehill.
He drank more water after weighing out for the More Rocco ride, resulting in being more than 1kg overweight when he returned after the race.
Stewards told Bowman the penalty could have been a suspension had More Rocco finished in the first three but took into account his guilty plea and his good record with respect to overweight breaches.
Kirinita's rider, apprentice Jackson Matthews, came down from a high with a thud when he was suspended for his winning ride on the Paul Perry-trained galloper.
Matthews was suspended from July 8 to July 14 and fined $500 for allowing Kirinita to shift out inside the final 150m, causing two other horses to be inconvenienced.
