Novellist gets first defeat in Hamburg

Monday, 2 July 2012: Novellist had been hoping for a continuation of his unbroken record in the German Derby but this time it didn't happen.

It was Pastorious, a son of Soldier Hollow, trained by Mario Hoffer and ridden by Terence Hellier, who came down the very wide outside to collect the trophy. Novellist had been carted wide by another runner and possibly lost momentum at this time, which enabled the winner to come past him. Third went to Girolamo.
