Monday, 16 July 2012: Australia-bound stayer Gatewood is set to have two more runs in the UK before he departs for the Melbourne spring carnival.
The latest purchase by Australian syndicate OTI Racing is slated to have his next start in the G3 Glorious Stakes (2400m) at Goodwood on August 3.
OTI principal Terry Henderson outlined plans for the classy stayer after the syndicate acquired a half share in the four-year-old from his owner-breeder George Strawbridge..
Gatewood has won four of his six starts and is unbeaten in three starts in 2012 including the Listed Wolferton Handicap (2000m) at Royal Ascot.
“He'll probably start in the Glorious Stakes at Goodwood and then he'll have another race towards the end of August and then go into quarantine,” Henderson said.
“He's still got to do some more work to get a run in the Cup but he's a very exciting horse, very progressive.”
Gatewood will have his final Melbourne Cup lead-up in Australia, but a decision on the race he contests will depend on his position in the Order of Entry following the release of weights in September.
Gatewood will run in the Melbourne Cup for UK trainer John Gosden but be transferred to Sydney's leading trainer Chris Waller after the spring carnival.
Waller will also train another OTI purchase, Studio, a winner of his only two starts in France.
Studio is one of three three-year-olds OTI has purchased with a view to next year's major spring staying races.
The others are Police Gazette going to Victorian trainer Darren Weir and Martinvast to join Gerald Ryan.
