Monday, 16 July 2012: Ortensia was obviously not at all happy with the bottomless going at Newmarket but stuck on solidly to finish 4th in the July Cup.
The glory went to Mayson, a 20/1 chance who gave Richard Fahey his first domestic G1. He revelled in the going and finished 5 lengths ahead of The Cheka with Society Run third and Ortensia fourth. Sepoy hated it and did nothing so he's been retired to stud, but Ortensia will stay in Europe and may go to York to contest the G1 Nunthorpe.
It was a miracle that racing could take place at all but it did, and the Superlative Stakes went to Olympic Glory, a head in front of Birdman, with Maxentius third just pipping out Artegiano.
On Friday the conditions were slightly better and Sendmylovetorose maintained her unbeaten record in the Cherry Hinton with Mauree a neck back in second, Jadaana was third.
The Falmouth Stakes was a 1-3 to France but possibly not with the expected runners. It was Giofra who took hold of the race to win by 1/2l from Elusive Kate who was prominent all the way and Siyouni who came from the back and took third. Golden Lilac was never happy with the track and was never in it, Maybe was there for a while but couldn't run on, Joviality was up there too but then went backwards and Chachamaidee was scratched.
Many meetings over the weekend were abandoned and the weather forecast for the next week is not madly optimistic.
