Tuesday, 7 August 2012: Newcastle trainer Darren Smith is recovering in hospital after a stable accident left him with broken collarbone and fractured ribs.

Jackie Smith said her husband was injured when a horse took fright as it was being led onto the track for training at Broadmeadow on Monday.

"Darren was trampled by the horse and he has fractured his collarbone and he has fractured ribs," she said.

"He is lucky his injuries weren't more serious."

Smith, a hands-on trainer who likes to ride trackwork, previously broke his heel when he was thrown from a horse last year and spent months on crutches.

Smith's injuries have not affected plans for stable star with the dual G1 winner already in Melbourne under the care of stable foreman Shane Treweek.

Smith's spirits also received a boost when his only runner at Monday's Taree meeting Savage Blaze won narrowly.
