Sunday, 19 August 2012: With a number of European raiders in the field it was the locals' Little Mike who led the field from go to whoa in a race with a singular absence of pace.
Afsare did a few things wrong in the race and finished up in the second place, and the excitement of the race was a dead heat for third between Colombian and Rahystrada.
The Secretariat, Beverly D and St Leger all saw European horses take the money. Bayrir, trained by Alain de Royer-Dupre, proved that a good horse can win a G1 without the assistance of drugs. He finished 1 1/4 lengths in front of Finnegans Wake 8/1 and a tiring Summer Front third in a race that was won by Treasure Beach in 2011, and he did nothing in the Million this year.
The Beverly D was a dream come true for Hayley Turner who became the first female jockey to win the Beverly D when I'm a Dreamer finished ahead of Marketing Mix, with Joviality third.
At Saratoga Man O'War winner Point of Entry added another good win to his CV with John Velazquez, who rode Wise Dan to victory the week before in similar fashion, bringing him home. Al Khali was second and Brilliant Speed third.
The Alabama saw Godolphin's Questing assert her dominance in this 3yo fillies race and in the division in general. In Lingerie was 9l back with Via Villagio back in third. Zo Impressive finished fourth and then was taken off by ambulance after suffering a fracture in a leg. The injury is thought to be potentially career threatening but not life threatening.
Over at Del Mar there were more upsets in the Oaks when Lady Shamrock produced a sizzling finish to get the better of Stormy Lucy 43/1 and Open Water 25/1.
