Connections have confirmed the Gai Waterhouse filly hasn’t settled back into stable life as a three-year-old, and will be given at least six more weeks to rest up before starting work on a summer or autumn campaign. Driefontein was runner-up to Snitzerland in the San Domenico over 1100m on August 18, finishing ahead of All Too Hard and Ninth Legion who are both contesting The Run To The Rose (1200m) on Saturday afternoon. It was her first run since a gutsy second in April in the listed Keith Mackay where she lugged 60kg in front for most the trip before being run down by Single Style . That came two weeks after running sixth in the Golden Slipper, where she botched the start. Tags: DRIEFONTEIN, Snitzerland, All Too Hard, Ninth Legion, Single Style

I don;t think Phelan Ready has won a single race since winning the Slipper and the poor thing is still going round. Two year old racing sucks! ”

Hi Hornet, A few recent-ish MM winner''s that have raced on ''reasonably well'' come to mind & your quite right it is single figures: Dance Hero (in particular) being the subsequent triple crown winner & raced OK as an older horse too. Phelan Ready raced on to win The Slipper & Luvly Jubly ran well after winning the MM. Then there are the bigger gun''s in: Testa Rossa, Regimental Gal, Excellerator,Assertive Lad & General Nediym :) ”

Maybe the problem is the consistent unsoundness of Fastnets? Just about every ''decent'' Fastnet seems to have soundness and injury issues. Also they rarely seem to last long past three. ”

Question....how many early(Magic Millions) 2yo placegetters race on and win as 3 & 4 yo''s let alone anything older....I''m betting it is single figures over 25 yrs or so. Driefontein is just a number, there''s hundreds of Magic million hopefuls out there every yr, just the numbers fell that horse''s way this year. Gai doesn''t have many in the stable that get past 3 either, wasn''t Tommy''s ethos race them hard, feed them well, if they break down, go and get another one. I''m not suggesting she doesn''t care aboutthe animals, it'' is a numbers game & the apple doesn''t fall far from the tree ”

Tired of the rubbish. Every one is entitled to their opinion, and that is mine, which by the way, may have been confirmed by the fact, that the horse has not come up, and has been sent for a spell. The horse should of been spelled after the Slipper, in my humble opinion. ”

compared to what anon?...carrying 60kg against zero? or 60kg against 54kg, which is the limit?...you''re more correct comparison is obviously nonsense...we are talking about the difference between 58 or 59 or 60kg as opposed to 54kg...so how you can possibly assert it is the same as 8-9kg difference on a human is a total mystery to me.. ”

Hear hear, tiredoftherubbish, it is astounding the number of people who believe that, like voodoo, there is some magic weight with which horses cannot cope ”

anonymous, where the hell did you get that comparision information-from your "shrink". ”

Hey ''Anonymous, I would be prepared to pay just to watch you run 200 metres flat out carrying an extra 8-9 kg on your back. I bet you wouldn''t feel too flash when you finished (especially if you had someone running alongside belting you with a whip to make sure you were trying!) ”

rubbish it''s more like an 80 kg person sprinting a few hundred meters with 8-9 kg on their back, just giving you a more correct comparison xD ”

Those big stables are factories. I agree with you Gary, that''s very tough on a 3yo filly in her second prepartion but in GW defence re Pierro she said she had no where else to start him so maybe the problem lies in the race programming. ”

Gary you have no idea about racing....what is the magic weight that turns into a "gut buster"?? ...horses carry 71kg over the jumps and more...Bernborough carried 65kg to win a Newmarket...horses carry 60kg plus literally every day of the week now with the limits being 54kg..All Too Hard had 59kg against Pierro...is that a gut buster too?...what about the second horse..he had 57kg...is that OK?..is there some magic in the weight above 58kg that the rest of us aren''t aware of...horses do weigh 600kg you know...it''s the equivalent of a human carrying about an extra 200 grams...all this advice you have for Gai Waterhouse Gary....did it ever occur to you that you are a total nobody and she is one of the all time great trainers??....that maybe...just maybe she might know more about training horses than you!!!....I know it''s a crazy concept but perhaps have a think about it.. ”

I said at the time, that running Driefontein in the Keith Mackay with 60kg was a bad mistake, and would be a gut buster, and a pointless exercise. After the great wins she gave her connections, aand a fantastic run in the Slipper, what was the point. They could of wrecked a top horse. Its a bit like what they are doing with Pierro on Saturday, no trials, 60kg, against 2 of the best horses in the land, you know he will try his heart out, and win loose or draw, he will be having a gut buster first up, what is the point. ”
