  Story By Rob Burnet

Saturday, 6 October 2012: Randwick was a Gai and Tommy show on Saturday with the duo combining to claim the Group 1 McGrath Estate Agents Metropolitan (2400m) with Glencadam Gold after their earlier Epsom win with Fat Al.

Trainer Gai Waterhouse was winning The Metropolitan for the eighth time and jockey Tommy Berry for the first, and it was comprehensive for both.

Berry controlled the race from the outset taking Glencadam Gold (53kg) to the lead before they went past the post for the first time and marking out a decent tempo as they went down the top straight and turned into the back.

Stablemate Reuben Percival followed after a wide run from barrier 13. The Verminator was next with Kelinni.

Passing the 1400m Berry eased off the pace and kept a tight hold on Glencadam Gold as they travelled through to the side straight with the order unchanged behind.

As they turned for the run home O’Hara sent Reuben Percival up alongside Glencadam Gold and they went up the rise together, but Berry was being patient and when they started to come down with 350m to run he let Glencadam Gold go.

Immediately they put 2L on the field who were all in trouble chasing the flying leader. Reuben Percival refused to give in, and Kelinni and Cassidy were good enough to pass for second, but Glencadam Gold was off in the distance.

Berry stood in the irons after the line after Glencadam Gold had crossed with 2 3/4L ahead, with Kelinni second and Reuben Percival third, the margin a short neck.

Stout Hearted was fourth and Lamasery fifth. The time was 2.29.71 on the Good 3 track with the final 600m in 34.88. Glencadam Gold paid $3.00 as favourite.

“Wasn’t that fantastic I can tell you and how about old Reuben running third today,” said Waterhouse.

“He is such an exciting horse and lookout Caulfield and Melbourne Cups. A double for Berry, there you go,” she exclaimed.

“Gai, Nash and I have being saying for some time that he is a Caulfield Cup horse. He is a top class stayer,” said Berry.

Glencadam Gold  is unbeaten since racing in Australia. He has gone from winning over 1550m at Canterbury on August 15 to winning the Group 3 Newcastle Cup over 2300m on September 20.

The rise to Group 1 status has been taken with ease and the next step is Melbourne and further competition at this level.

8 metrops and 7 epsoms since getting her training licence in 1991, what a terrific record
well done gai and team, hard work pays off and may the results continue, that horse that won the metrop will be hard to beat down south ”
