Popular Coffs Harbour trainer Mal Gerrard, who guided the career of multiple Group winner Mr. Innocent, died.
He had been in ill health for some time.
Gerrard, a great character of the turf, and Mr. Innocent proved a formidable combination with the Mr. Henrysee stallion winning 14 and being placed in 10 of his 39 starts for prizemoney in excess of $1.7 million.
Mr. Innocent won the Group One Doomben 10,000 in 2000, the Group Two Premiere Stakes in 1999 and 2000, Group Two Phar Lap Stakes in 1999, Group Two Expressway Stakes in 2000, Group Three Courier-Mail Classic in 1999 and the Group Three Tramway Handicap in 2000.
Gerrard had been battling cancer, it was reported on Sky Channel.

Didn''t know Mal had passed away, no more pain old mate RIP. Mal was a former colleague of mine from Tasmania when we rode over jumps years back, a fair but fearless jockey, he won the Victorian Grand Nation Hurdle on Strong Guy for Joe Rolfe back in the 70''s. ”
